How to get your online business off the ground

One of the most important issues in any business is to get traffic to your site.

Whether you are purely online or you have a brick and mortar business (which also needs an online presence by the way!), we need visitors and customers.   Without these, the business will fail.

In the online world there are many “offers” of traffic – but to be honest, there is a lot of trashy traffic out there and it is a total waste of time and money.   One has to give due diligence when in any kind of business and very especially, an online business.

It is a very good idea, in the first instance, to consider what your marketing objectives are, for example:

  1. Promoting and managing your Brand
  2. Increasing your traffic by targeting the right audience
  3. Engaging with your customers
  4. Building loyalty
  5. Increasing sales

Once you’ve established your objectives, it becomes easier to see what option or options will work best for you.  There is free traffic and paid traffic.   Free Traffic, for example via FaceBook and other social media, takes longer and has to be used very wisely (more about that in a future blog) as one can become guilty of spamming and ruin one’s reputation in the process.  Paid traffic as the name implies requires some investment but does not have to be exorbitant and is also available via FaceBook and other social media as well as other online advertising options.

Social media is an excellent way to expand your reach and network.

There are various platforms one can use to advertise your business – some proven over and over again.  Examples of such are Google, Amazon and My Advertising Pays.

Blogging and providing unique and interesting content can provide value and it is one of the first and most essential steps that should taken towards increasing your traffic,    If it is your own blog, you are free to advertise your business or product on that site at no extra fee.

All these and other options are there to get your business in front of viewers and potential buyers.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FUTURE!

Some time back Tom Corley researched and then wrote an excellent article (and a book) about the differing habits between the poor and the rich.   There is a staggering difference between the habits of the two groups.   So much one can learn from.

Absolutely invaluable information.   The differences between rich and poor appear simple—sometimes almost intuitive—but nonetheless very significant. Once you have read the article, try to aim to take up these habits, and you are virtually guaranteed to become better off.

Guess who else struggled with consistency?

People from all walks of life experience this problem at one point or another.   Some great leaders and sports persons that I can think of found that it can be difficult to be consistent.  But … in order to succeed, no matter if it is your business, career, sport, health and fitness, you need to be consistent.

Consistency involves regularity, being constant and stability.

Someone once said that consistency builds trust.   I agree.

Roger Federer said he had struggled with consistency early in his career.  But, look at him now, he is one of the most consistent and successful tennis players around.  Arsene Wenger one said: “When you look at people who are successful, you will find that they aren’t  the people who are motivated, but who have consistency in their motivation”.  Consistently motivated to be a success in whatever they do. Reaching their dreams, their goals.

Think about it – if your goal is to become fitter and you’ve neglected yourself for a good number of years.  One or two sessions at the local gym now and again will not produce the desired outcome!  You would need to commit to attending the gym regularly/consistently until you achieve your goal.  Stopping & starting will not get the desired result.

Millard Drexler one said: “People like consistency.  Whether it’s a store or a restaurant, they want to come in and see what you are famous for”

If you are trying to build your business – be it online or bricks & mortar – CONSISTENCY is vital.   What if you found a brand new little coffee shop in your area and they really had a fabulous range of coffee and other hot drinks along with home-baked rolls and out of the ordinary sandwiches and cakes, etc.  Cosy atmosphere and free wi-fi –  just a great place to be.  That would be brilliant.  But what if you wanted to pop in after the school-run or on a busy Saturday morning and the place was closed with a notice.  “Back again tomorrow” or “back in an hour”.  Or even if they were open but did not provide the products or service they were advertising, people would lose interest. Their reputation would falter and their business would not succeed.
If you have an online business, people have signed up to your newsletter or mailing list because they are interested in your service or product.   If you do not have regular follow-up by means of news, special offers, helpful hints and tips, something of value, they will lose interest.   Consistent marketing, consistently providing value is a must.
It isn’t easy, but it can be done and must be our modus operandi.   If we are committed to reaching our goal and consistent in striving to achieve it, we will succeed.

How committed are you?

Some years ago, when I first started my search to establish my own online business  and make a liveable income from it, more than one of my mentors stressed that if I was serious about starting my own business, there were 3 essentials needed.

  • Commitment
  • Consistency
  • Coachability

This has been repeated time and time again by various successful business persons, regardless of whether they are online businesses or traditional bricks and mortar off-line business.   (Just by the way, having said that – every bricks and mortar business needs a web presence in this day & age!!!)

I know this advice has been invaluable.

I went through a phase where I flitted around, not quite knowing exactly what I wanted or how to move forward.   I realized that it was unwise (as had been advised by my mentors) to have a “few” things going at one time (especially when starting out) as none would get the attention and commitment they needed to have in order to grow and make a success of it.

Having done research around some business opportunities, I eventually found the business that would suit me as not only would it really help me achieve my goal but it would help me help others in the process!   This was just over 2 years ago and then I have not looked back.

Commitment according to the dictionary means “the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc”.  Commitment involves being dedicated and loyal to the cause eg your business, project, relationship, etc

I have put everything into my online business and it is rewarding me for my commitment.
